| Feel free to join the conversation Rob!
But I'm afraid I can only partially agree with you. If we're talking about Celts like the ones the Romans fought they'd loose straight out in an even fight (presuming they don't have any HUGE advantages like surprise, terrain etc.). Keep in mind the Romans were able to hand the Celts their asses as long as they cared to do so. They were well on their way to pacifying all of Scotland up until the 2nd century AD when they just stopped caring and retreated back to Hadrian's wall. Organized troops vs. Unorganized mob will see the Unorganized mob get their asses handed to them every time (unless the Organized troops are unorganized in which case the point is moot). The only reason the Celts became renowned as warriors is because some of them never gave up and continued fighting in a guerilla style inflicting heavy casualties. So in a straight up battle the Celts are set up to fail.
Also keep in mind that the Scots would later adopt the same formation the Greeks used albeit in a different form (schilltron vs. phalanx).
Not to say that different Celts wouldn't totally hand the Spartan's asses to them. Robert the Bruce's schilltron formations were definitely a whole lot lighter and a whole lot better at maneuvering than Spartan phalanxes. Owain Gwyndmyr(?) (I can't remember his last name, but the last king of Wales) anyhow his army would slaughter the Spartans (Spartans =Tanks, Welsh Longbow with Iron tipped arrows = bazooka) not to mention his wicked knifemen (renowned throughout Europe). if they could get inside the Spartan spears. And finally Jacobite Scots (Culloden,) would definitely be able to hand the Spartan's their asses the Highland Charge would totally smash the Spartan lines amongst the sound of bagpipes. Mind you some would say this comparison is moot because none of these Celtic forces existed at the same time as the Spartans.
So in conclusion the Spartans were simply the best Bronze Age fighting force period. (Celts can't actually even be compared to the Spartans because the earliest military records we have of them show them in an Iron Age state of development.)
Just my 2 cents (maybe more but who's counting?) | |

| whooa, that's intense. Jon Pirate N. I'm glad I played a lot of 'Age of Empires' when I was younger, so at least I understand a bit of what your sayiung about all these celts and spartafreakz. So I just know that the phalanx is pretty strong but slow (<- that's totally based on a computergame, so don't take it serious ) Anyways, I'd allways prefere James' love rather than spears and swords | |
